Bob Mould @ The Liquid Room

favourite tracks of vengeful heartache

A solo show is an odd format for indie rock but this was clearly of no concern for a veteran performer like Bob Mould. With a voice so strong it was as if the air in front of the mic was being punched with words, favourite tracks of vengeful heartache from Mould's solo career sat seamlessly alongside I Apologize from Husker Du's essential 'New Day Rising'. Songs such as those from Sugar's back catalogue were slightly bereft of the drumming that drives them, yet the delivery was insistent enough to highlight Mould's clever, poetical lyrics. The buoyant atmosphere led to some great sing-alongs, particularly on Hoover Dam and If I Can't Change Your Mind from 'Copper Blue'. Onstage banter really brought the crowd together too with some deliciously bitchy asides; a rare treat to hear a room full of people laughing at Jack White. A flawless performance, but definitely a gig for long-serving fans. [Caroline Hurley]
