Beach House / Holy Other @ The Arches, 29 October

Live Review by Bram E. Gieben | 05 Nov 2012

Holy Other leaves many of the audience confused, but for those attuned to his understated, undulating sound and beat-scapes, he is nothing short of a revelation. Performing the majority of With U and this year's Held, he twists and stretches vocal samples, subtle drums and synth lines into dubbed-out sonic sculpture, underpinned by flowing, sinuous rivers of bass. The thrilling tempo-shifts of Impouring, Held and Touch are completely unique, an inspired inversion of the builds and drops of dubstep and techno.

Beach House begin their set with some tracks from justifiably-beloved 2010 album Teen Dream. Victoria Legrand's voice is powerful and earthy, soaring above the ringing, Cure-esque guitar lines of Alex Scally and echoing around the packed Arches crowd, before the band transition into the equally stately territory of latest outing Bloom. It's the new material that really shines, Myth emerging as an epic, life-affirming torch song. At their best, Beach House evoke the languid, sultry atmospherics of Mazzy Star, or the perfect indie-pop of Throwing Muses. What the band lack in originality, they more than make up for with a heartfelt intensity.
