Charlotte Brimner brings her electronic pop to Edinburgh, and shares some intriguing new material

The heart-warming Millie warms up for Be Charlotte tonight; her genuine and delicate solo performance fills The Mash House's main room. Right on time, Be Charlotte gracefully emerge on stage to deliver the closing performance of their Heart of Survival Scottish tour.

While the band feel united in their performance and stage presence, the focal point of Be Charlotte is Charlotte Brimner, the young vocalist who serves as the face and lyrical soul of the outfit. Her voice alternates between a low and high range, which combined with her effervescent neon energy makes for waves of youthful electronic pop. What is truly authentic and rather striking is the genuine core of Brimner's lyrics, and the band's playful and innocent desire to connect with their audiences.

Be Charlotte play well-established tracks like Machines That Breathe (which tonight is a perfect match with the studio version recorded last year) but they also treat us to some new material too. While most songs are rhythm-driven with a deep bass, frantic drums, and gently peaking vocals, the new pieces presented have an intriguing darker hue to them.

Deeper into the set, People sees the audience submit to Be Charlotte's inescapable energy, subliminally forcing them to dance. A few songs later comes One Drop, a much deeper and more musically complex number. This makes for an enjoyably disorienting change of pace, and although quite different from Be Charlotte’s established style, theirs is a universal sound; a characteristic of Be Charlotte which makes them widely relatable.
