Ballboy @ Cabaret Voltaire

preaching to the choir

Article by Heather Crumley | 10 Feb 2007
Folky, quiet, and ever so slighty dour, Ballboy are unlikely national heroes, but to the enthralled crowd packing every last inch of Cabaret Voltaire (didn't there used to be air in here?), that's exactly what they are.
Tonight's gig is the perfect antidote to the brainless bounce of the Fratellis et al, proof that exciting, innovative new music is alive and well in Scotland. Indeed, while Ballboy are effectively preaching to the choir tonight, they have their work cut out for them following stellar support from Glasgow exports Sixpeopleaway and St Jude's Infirmary. And while they might seem a bit subdued (only the first row stands a chance of hearing the mumbled attempts at banter), they turn in a captivating performance with a fan pleasing as-you-like-it set list. It's the perfect warm and fuzzy Christmas gig - even the long running set resulting in being sharply steered outside into the freezing cold can't dampen the spirits. [Heather Crumley]
