Scottish Gigs of the Week: 4-10 April
This week's Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee gig guide, featuring The Ninth Wave, Counterflows Festival and visits from Stormzy, British Sea Power and Pulled Apart by Horses
Gigs in Glasgow
Posable Action Figures @ Hug & Pint, 4 Apr
The electro-blues, pop-rock duo celebrate the launch of their new single Hummingbird and accompanying mixtape with a pair of shows this week. First up is a gig at the Hug & Pint with support from literal band of brothers Ded Rabbit; PAF also play Sneaky Pete's on 6 Apr with The Motion Poets and Foreignfox.
Stormzy @ O2 Academy, 5 Apr
There aren't many better at getting a crowd fired up than Michael Omari, aka Stormzy. Fresh from the release of his diverse, genre-hopping debut Gang Signs & Prayer, the grime frontrunner brings his high-energy live show to the Academy.
Counterflows Festival @ various venues, 6-9 Apr
Counterflows returns for a weekend of avant-garde music and sound art, spread across the CCA, Art School, Glad Cafe and beyond. There's too much to detail in this lone paragraph, so check out the full programme on the Counterflows website, and get ready to have your perceptions smashed and ears gently surprised.
Mt Doubt + Foreignfox @ Nice N Sleazy, 8 Apr
A double bill from either side of the central belt, with Mt Doubt and Foreignfox celebrating the launch of their new split single on Scottish Fiction, with Edinburgh-based four-piece SKJØR also along for the ride. Listen to Foreignfox's Lights Off, Carry Me Home and Tourists by Mt Doubt at the links – Dundonians can also catch the same line-up on 7 Apr at Beat Generator!
Lucia + The Ninth Wave @ Berkeley Suite, 9 Apr
The pair of local favourites join forces for a dual vinyl launch at the Berkeley Suite, with support from fellow Glaswegian up-and-comers Fauves. £3 on the door, but pay an extra pound and you'll get a super-special Lucia/Ninth Wave zine as well. Find out more about The Ninth Wave in our guide to this month's Wide Days showcase.
Live music in Edinburgh
Dan Owen @ Sneaky Pete's, 5 Apr
Take in the deep, soulful, blues-inflected tones of Dan Owen, taking time out from supporting Birdy on her European tour for a headline show at Sneaky's. Glasgow-dwellers can catch Owen at The Poetry Club the following night.
Jon Mackenzie @ Voodoo Rooms, 9 Apr
Scottish singer, songwriter and guitarist Jon Mackenzie recently caught our attention with his latest single, and accompanying mesmeric music video, for Holidays on the Moon, taken from his debut solo EP of the same name. Holidays on the Moon is a collection of fantasy tales with themes of love, travel and hope, making its lunar landing on 10 Apr.
British Sea Power @ Liquid Room, 9 Apr
Brighton indie mainstays BSP return to Edinburgh in support of new album Let The Dancers Inherit The Party, joined on the night by local indie-folk lynchpin Meursault.
Twelfth Day @ Traverse Bar, 9 Apr
Twelfth Day – fiddler Catriona Price and harpist Esther Swift – expertly walk the line between trad folk and gypsy jazz on new album Cracks In The Room; catch them in the flesh at the Trav this weekend, or at the Hug & Pint in Glasgow on 7 Apr.
Gig of the week
Pulled Apart by Horses @ King Tut's, 5 Apr
Leeds' finest are back with their first new album since 2014 – The Haze, as our reviewer put it, is the sound made by a band with something to prove, so expect that rekindled energy to translate to the intimate stage at Tut's. We caught up with bassist Robert Lee earlier this year; read our interview here.
