Live music in Edinburgh

Dutch Uncles @ Electric Circus, 1 Mar

"Dutch Uncles are an odd bunch" – that's how our review of the Manchester four-piece's latest album Big Balloon kicks off, but the Uncles use that oddness to their advantage. Expect a stunningly inventive indie-prog-disco hybrid that's all shifting time signatures and great hooks.

Tropic of Cancer @ Summerhall, 1 Mar

Los Angeles-based Tropic of Cancer is the solo project of Camella Lobo. Though her music has been labeled gothic, shoegaze and drone pop, Lobo’s take on her influences is anything but nostalgic. Tropic Of Cancer has managed to imbue its own elusive gaze and craft a strangely beautiful and intoxicating sound in the wake of its predecessors.

Bonfire Nights w/ D T H P D L & Fotzepolitic @ Sneaky Pete's, 3 Mar

London-via-Australia five-piece Bonfire Nights blend abrasive guitars with hypnotic beats, and they bring their "psych-infused ambient pop" to Sneaky's this weekend. Support comes from local noise merchants D T H P D L and Glasgow shoegaze trio Fotzepolitic

Live music in Glasgow

Alasdair Roberts @ The Glad Cafe, 2 Mar

Over the past 15 years, Alasdair Roberts has released eight albums of both self-written material and interpretations of traditional songs, all played in a variety of diverse electric and acoustic arrangements, bringing a certain modern thrust to his music. Roberts is currently touring ninth album Pangs read our four-star review here – is joined at the Glad Cafe by cohorts Stevie Jones and Alex Neilson.

Glaswegian Record Fair @ Old Hairdresser's, 4 Mar

A new event that's all about celebrating Glasgow’s unique grassroots music scene, the first Glaswegian Record Fair features an independent label market with stalls from the likes of Olive Grove Records, Fuzzkill, Struggletown and Good Grief. In the evening, catch stripped-back live sets from The Van T's, Sweaty Palms and Catholic Action – read our chat with organiser Elina Lin.

Tall Ships @ King Tut's, 6 Mar

It hasn’t always been plain sailing for Brighton-based band Tall Ships. Despite hearty acclaim for their early EPs and 2012 album Everything Touching, they more recently found themselves stuck without a manager or a label. Nevertheless, due to true grit (and a little bit of help from Fatcat), they persevered and will release a brand new album, Impressions, on 31 Mar. See a preview tonight.

Gig of the week

Paws + Savage Mansion // Summerhall Mardi Gras @ Summerhall, 4 Mar

Make that gigs of the week, as Summerhall line up an unlikely but undeniably juicy double on Saturday night. First up are Glasgow pop-punk trio Paws – expect them to shake Summerhall to its rafters, and be prepared to get sweaty!

Once that’s over, why not make the most of it and stay out for Summerhall’s Mardi Gras Party? There you can dance the night away to a fine array of aural treats including a troupe of disco nuns – Rides of Christ, featuring members of Kid Canaveral – as they play their take on the likes of Prince.
