Officially launched in 2008, Record Store Day returns this Saturday (12 April) to record shops across the country, with extended opening hours, and exclusive releases galore – find the full list of releases here, and use their store locator to find out which shops are involved in the big day.

Of course, many of your favourite record shops can’t help but go above and beyond for Record Store Day. Putting the focus on music’s unmatched ability to bring people together, in-stores and special one-off events have become a big part of the day that now massively revolves around community. With the countdown now officially on, and the sun firmly donning his hat, we’ve pulled together a list of RSD events taking place this Saturday to help celebrate the big day.

Dundee

In Dundee, Assai, Thirteen and Le Freak Records are all taking part in the day, with Le Freak bringing the party vibes to Perth Road from 10am to 8pm. Expect all-vinyl DJ sets taking place in the shop throughout the day from local selectors like Kieron Nieve (DEMS / Rare), Egang and Jukebox Junkies. It's all BYOB, with prizes to be won for the first 20 through the door and discounts on non-RSD vinyl up for grabs. Ts & Cs apply – full details of Le Freak's plans are on their Instagram.

Glasgow

In Glasgow, most of the big hitters seem to be involved, but it’s parties from Some Great Reward and Monorail that promise to keep you dancing throughout the day. The team at Monorail will be taking early bird orders from 8am, with doors officially opening at 9am. Then, from 12.30pm to 8pm, there’ll be live music from Nightshift, Chizu Nnamdi and The Mary Column plus DJ sets from Anna & Holly’s Dance Party, Andrew Thomson (Huntleys + Palmers), Rebecca Marshall (Ribeka) and DJ Antonio.

Meanwhile at The Cooperage off Pollokshaws Road, Some Great Reward will be open from 8am to 8pm, with courtyard access from 4am for keen beans. From midday, vinyl-only DJ sets from Ripped In Glasgow, Claire Biddles and Butho The Warrior will provide a soundtrack for those taking in the atmosphere in the courtyard, while there’ll be live music from 4pm with Chelsea K, Sulka and more set to play. Furthermore, in collaboration with pals at Koelschip Yard, RSD buyers with proof of purchase at SGR will get a discount on pints of the official RSD beer from DEYA, with a great deal on takeaway cans too.

If you want to keep the party going in Glasgow, Saint Luke's have teamed up with Blitzkrieg Records for a vinyl night that will see DJs Sean Campbell and Gordon (Electric Eliminators) go B2B all night from 6 til midnight.

Edinburgh

In the capital, all the independents are vying for your attention this year with big parties going on in Leith, Stockbridge, Bruntsfield and the Old Town. Starting in Bruntsfield, Thorne Records will have free beer, soft drinks and live music from Rosie H Sullivan, while just across Bruntsfield Links Umbrella Vinyl are celebrating all things vinyl with DJ sets in-store from 12-5pm, with an after party co-hosted with Greenhouse Records at The Royal Dick from 6.30pm.

On Cockburn Street, Underground Solu’shn are open from 8am to 7pm. With over 400 RSD titles up for grabs on the day, they’ll also have a packed schedule of live music and DJ sets from 1pm focusing on celebrating artists they regularly support in the shop. In-store highlights include a live set from Accident Machine, and DJ sets from Blanck Mass, Ian Rankin and Natasha Kitty Katt among others. If you're in the area, swing by Avalanche for a peek of their Taylor Swift x Butcher Billy exhibition.

In Stockbridge, the VoxBox crew are taking over St Vincent Chapel once more for a packed day of live music and RSD shenanigans, helping to raise funds for Tiny Changes. With a pop-up shop in the chapel open from 8am, the main space will feature a licensed bar with live performances and discussion from 11am to 5.30pm; Vashti Bunyan, David Keenan and James Yorkston will all be in for a chat, with live music from Withered Hand, Bell Lungs, Haiver, Chrysanths, Jill Lorean and more.

Finally, in Leith, Good Vibes are an official part of Record Store Day this year for the first time and they’re going all out. You’ll find hundreds of official exclusive RSD releases in-store, with doors opening at 8am. Meanwhile, a few doors down at neighbouring bar The False Widow, pals at Lost Map Records have curated an afternoon of live music with Curtis Miles, R.AGGS, Town Centre, Dominic Hooper and Isabella Strange playing from 12-5pm. And if you want to keep the party going, Good Vibes have teamed up with vinyl enthusiasts Supper Club (of which I am a member) for a Record Store Night After Party at the Leith Cricket Club (8pm-1am). The Supper Club crew will be on hand spinning vinyl throughout the night alongside pals Arusa Qureshi and DJ Ham, with live music from Health & Beauty.
