Wed 5 Apr

Former Spice Girl Melanie C returned late last year with her first solo album in four years, and now she plays a show on home turf. Will the local crowd forgive her promotional work with The Sun newspaper? Only one way to find out, we suppose. O2 Academy, 7pm, £24

Thu 6 Apr

Another round of Deep Cuts from the team at Getintothis – Chester indiepoppers and Skinny faves Peaness top the bill, with budding electro/R'n'B star Neil Noa, rock'n'rollers Jo Mary and deft Merseybeat merchants The Shipbuilders also on hand for a bargain gathering of new music. Buyers Club, 7.30pm, £4

Alternatively, those of a punkier persuasion might want to head along to Sound Food and Drink, where reformed Peel faves Crocodile God bring their pacy, poppy 90s line-up alongside mighty streetpunkers Down & Outs. They're joined by Blackpool's Poly-Esters, whose concoction of Riot Grrrl and proto-grunge influences points to a good time being had by all. Sound Food & Drink, 8pm, Free entry

Fri 7 Apr

Hip-hop, jazz and funk collide headlong with full-on party vibes as The Hot 8 Brass Band bring their formidable live show to IWF. Brain-boggling musicianship, jaw-dropping reinterpretations of old favourites and an all-round unique experience make this one to mark in your calendar immediately. Invisible Wind Factory, 7.30pm, £16.50

A night of heavy fun takes over the Zanzibar – local heroes Furian play their first hometown show of the year, joined by the hard-riffing Serperus, no-bullshit metallers Kimura, youthful grunge types Devils Henchmen, NWOBHM disciples Into The Fall and prog-goth quintet Ex Morte Vita. More metal for your money, innit. Zanzibar, 7.30pm, £5-6

Alt rock trio Wife host a show in Maguire's to kick off the weekend – you'd imagine they own a fair few Nirvana and QOTSA records between 'em judging by their combination of hooks and off-kilter riffola. They're joined by pals Flying Model Rockets and The KulaksMaguire's Pizza Bar, 7pm, £5

Sat 8 Apr

Ambitious for a band to headline their debut show proper, but that's what alternative crew Thunder and the Gypsies are planning to do. A sturdy collection of pals rounds out the line-up, including Filthy JanesSkinner's LaneThe Bicycle Thieves and Mike BlueMaguire's Pizza Bar, 7pm, £5

Sun 9 Apr

Some call him the Modfather, others know him simply as the genius behind The Jam and The Style Council. Others still see pictures and wonder when he's going to sort his hair out, but either way: Paul Weller is back in Liverpool. It's sold out, of course, so you'll have to see what magic the fates can weave if you want to head along. Guild of Students, 7pm, £Sold out

Tue 11 Apr

Shrewsbury singer-songwriter Dan Owen takes his pain and heartache around the UK – look, we're not experts when it comes to this betting thing, but if someone said they'd put money on this being the last time Owen will tour round venues this intimate, we'd say they're probably onto something. Good odds! That's what they say, isn't it? (Is it?) Studio 2, 7.30pm, £8
