Gigs in Edinburgh this week

Wye Oak @ Summerhall, 21 Aug
As we reached the mid-point of the year, Wye Oak’s glorious sixth album The Louder I Call, the Faster it Runs was voted as our fifth favourite album of the year by our lovely music team, so imagine our excitement when they announced an Edinburgh date in the very building that we’re based! Catch Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack in all their experimental, folky, synthy, dream-pop glory tonight at Summerhall. You won’t regret it!

Martyn Bennett's Bothy Culture @ Edinburgh Playhouse, 21 Aug
Edinburgh International Festival's Light on the Shore series continues tonight with Martyn Bennett's Bothy Culture, a unique performance by the Grit Orchestra and Greg Lawson of Bennett's second album of the same name.

Sage Francis & B. Dolan @ Summerhall, 22 Aug
The Epic Beard Men, Rhode Island rappers and spoken word artists Sage Francis and B. Dolan are back following a run at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe for one night only. Can't catch them at Summerhall tonight, then fret not for they also play Stereo, Glasgow, 23 Aug.

Mogwai @ Leith Theatre, Edinburgh, 22 & 23 Aug
As they prepare to release the soundtrack to KIN this month, the mighty Moggerz return to Edinburgh for two nights of foundation-shaking post-rock to please your body and soul. We are a little concerned, however, at how loud the Glasgow Rock Action giants are compared with how fragile the Leith Theatre is but we have it on good authority that it’ll be fine. While the building might be fine, your ears will not if you don’t wear protection, so we know we sound like a broken record when we say this, but BRING YOUR RUDDY EARPLUGS!

Boards of Canada's Hi Scores performed by s t a r g a z e @ Leith Theatre, 25 Aug
Berlin-based classical collective s t a r g a z e give a special performance of Boards of Canada's 1996 EP Hi Scores; conducted by André de Ridder, this will be a rare opportunity to hear Boards of Canada's music in a live setting.

Plastic Animals @ Henry's Cellar Bar, 25 Aug
Those champs at City of Glass are unstoppable this month with another stellar line-up, this time in the lovely basement that is Henry's Cellar Bar. Tonight, Edinburgh-based warm and fuzzy noise-makers Plastic Animals will play their first Edinburgh show in over a year alongside Real Numbers and bell lungs.

Fistymuffs @ Henry's Cellar Bar, 26 Aug
The amazing Fistymuffs, fresh from releasing their debut EP About Time play Henry's Cellar Bar tonight and you should absolutely go and see them. They're not headlining, so be sure to get down nice and early so you don't miss them!

Niteworks @ Summerhall, 26 Aug
Skye-based electro/ceilidh party starters, Niteworks bring the ruckus to Edinburgh's Summerhall tonight in what is set to be a non-stop party. Can't make it tonight or want to see them more than just once, then you can also catch them the night before at SWG3 Studio Warehouse in Glasgow

The Weather Station @ Sneaky Pete's, 26 Aug
The project of Toronto singer-songwriter Tamara Lindeman, The Weather Station's eponymous fourth record was self-produced and released in October of last year. Catch Lindeman tonight with her band in the intimate surrounds of Sneaks. Can't make tonight/based in Glasgow? Catch them tomorrow at The Hug & Pint.

Scottish Events of the Week

Dale Barclay Fundraiser @ Broadcast, 23 Aug
Dale Barclay (The Amazing Snakeheads / And Yet It Moves) was diagnosed with grade 4 Glioblastoma brain cancer in December of last year. While the NHS have done everything in their power, Barclay is now in need of specialist care and his treatment is now sadly going to cost money. To help raise money, Control Social Club and Hiip Priest are hosting this fundraiser tonight at Broadcast featuring Catholic Action, Shredd, Bluebirds and Natalie Pryce. If you can make it, great! If not, you can still support the cause via GoFundMe

Since Yesterday @ Leith Theatre, 24 Aug
Celebrating the unsung women pioneers of Scottish pop music, Since Yesterday is a brand new documentary from musician Carla J. Easton and filmmaker Blair Young. This night, as part of EIF's Light on the Shore series, will feature live performances from Bossy Love and The Van T's, plus a supergroup, made up of Easton herself, Kid Canaveral's Kate Lazda, Randolph Leap's Vicki Cole, Stacey Sievwright (The Moth & The Mirror) and Lesley McLaren (Altered Images), will play the songs of The McKinleys, Ettes, Strawberry Switchblade, The Twinsets and more. Expect loads of special appearances along the way.

St. Vincent @ Edinburgh Playhouse
, 26 Aug

With five solo records, a collaborative album with Talking Heads’ David Byrne, her own signature guitar design and several other amazing things we don’t have room to list here, Annie Clark is one lady we can’t wait to see this August on a rare trip to Scotland as part of her I Am a Lot Like You! tour at the Edinburgh International Festival. After causing a bit of controversy late last year due to touring 2017’s Masseduction on her own (God forbid), Clark is always one to surprise in a live setting so we’re super excited to see what she’s got in store for us.

Gigs in Glasgow this week

Stella Donelly @ The Hug & Pint, 22 Aug
With her excellently titled Thrush Metal EP given a reissue earlier this year via Secretly Canadian, be sure to catch Australian singer-songwriter Stella Donnelly at The Hug & Pint.

Britney Spears @ The SSE Hydro, 22 Aug
It’s Britney, bitch! Yes, the princess of pop herself, Britney Spears graces our shores tonight, as she takes her absolutely mammoth Piece of Me tour around the world. The show allows fans to see Britbrit’s record-breaking, four-year headlining Las Vegas residency show before she retires it completely, so don’t miss out. She was born to make you happy after all.

Redolent @ The Hug & Pint, 23 Aug
We recently premiered Edinburgh four-piece Redolent's music video for their massive single Dantercepies – catch them at The Hug & Pint as part of an Antidote Booking showcase, alongside Glasgow Coma Scale and Erin Friel.

Owls of Now EP launch @ The Old Hairdressers, 25 Aug
Caz, J. Bell, Kate and Vicky, aka Glasgow/London band Owls of Now, emailed us just the other day to invite us to their episode four EP launch where they've promised: "a fine noisy time will be had by all, especially the women, non-binary people and the queers." We've had a listen to the EP and think it's great so you should head along to The Old Hairdressers for a dance. Support comes in the form of The Farting Suffragettes and Scragfight.

DZ Deathrays @ The Hug & Pint, 25 Aug
Aussie dance-punk duo DZ Deathrays released their third album Bloody Lovely at the start of the year and they arrive to play in the intimate surrounds of The Hug & Pint. Go have a dance, you owe it to yourself. Get down early for support from These New South Whales and Slime City. Top names all round.

Alex Napping @ The Glad Cafe, 26 Aug
The lovely Austin-based four-piece, Alex Napping set off on their first ever UK tour this August and are stopping by Glasgow's Glad Cafe tonight.
