Gigs in Edinburgh this week

Chuchoter @ Cult Espresso, 2 Aug
Edinburgh duo Chuchoter are celebrating the release of their second EP, Pieces tonight, which features an infectious collection of explorative electro-pop bangers – and as if you could say no to a free, BYOB gig in one of Edinburgh's best coffee shops!? Joining them to celebrate on the night will be electronic producers Midi Paul and Hostel Freaks.

Thumpasaurus @ Underbelly Cowgate, 3-5 Aug
We were fortunate enough to catch this LA-based funky five-piece last August at Underbelly Cowgate so are delighted to see they’re back for another run of late night weekend parties throughout this year’s festival. Drawing influences from the likes of Talking Heads, Jimi Hendrix and Black Flag, and sounding like a rude, high-powered Flight of the Conchords with lyrics like ‘I’m too funky for my motherfuckin’ grandma,’ we’ll no doubt be back again and you should go too if you want a guaranteed good time.

Five Telegrams @ Festival Square, 3 Aug
The Edinburgh International Festival this year opens with a light and music extravaganza entitled Five Telegrams in the city centre's Festival Square, just off Lothian Road. The Opening Event will include whole building projection mapping on to the stunning Usher Hall courtesy of 59 Productions, with accompanying music written and composed by Anna Meredith. Read our interview with Meredith here to find out more.

Adam Holmes and the Embers @ Summerhall, 4 Aug
One of the first shows taking place as part of Summerhall's Nothing Ever Happens Here series this August comes from the sublime stylings of Adam Holmes and the Embers. Over the past few years, the Edinburgh-born singer-songwriter has been nominated twice for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards as well as for Scottish Album of the Year in 2014 and 2017.

GOBLIN @ Summerhall, 5 & 6 Aug
Suspiria and Dawn of the Dead 40th anniversary celebrations, catch the Italian progressive rock band two nights on the trot as part of Summerhall’s Fringe programme where they'll be performing the soundtrack to 1977 supernatural horror Suspiria live followed by a special greatest gits show on the first night, and vice versa on night two. Get on it quick as this will sell out.

Scottish Event of the Week

[Emma Pollock by Allan Lewis]

Live at the Longlist 2018 @ King Tut's, 1 Aug
Scottish music gets its time to shine, as the SAY Awards announce this year’s 20 longlisted albums tonight. Live at the Longlist will also see previous nominees provide some extra entertainment, with an exclusive collaboration between Stina Tweeddale of Honeyblood and Carla J. Easton of TeenCanteen, a performance from Emma Pollock and a DJ set from Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite.

Gigs in Glasgow this week

Start to End: Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill @ Stereo, 1 Aug
'Isn't it ironic, don't you think? / It's like raaaa-e-aaaaaiiiin on your weddiiiiing day / It's a free-eee riiiiii-e-iiiiide / When you've already paid,' is what you will NOT be able to stop singing for days after the Start to End team give Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill a well-deserved airing tonight with vocals courtesy of Charlotte Printer and Rachel Lightbody. 'You, you, you, oughtta know!!'

OMD @ Kelvingrove Bandstand, 3 Aug
'Enola gay, you should have stayed at home yesterday,' and if you took that sage advice from OMD, then OMG it means you can head out tonight and see them at the Kelvingrove Bandstand for a night of wonderous synth-pop action not to be sniffed at, but to be seriously danced to. Head bobs and hips at the ready!

LYLO @ The Old Hairdressers, 3 Aug
Avoid the hustle and bustle of the Fringe opening weekend and migrate to Glasgow for the next few days instead. LYLO play a homecoming show tonight, rounding up a brief UK tour, where there’ll surely be lots of saucy sax in store.

Broadcast Summer Session @ Broadcast, 4 Aug
If you thought a hangover day was in store this Saturday you were wrong. There’s plenty more local live music to enjoy at Broadcast Summer Session from the likes of Home$lice, Tongue Trap, Laura St. Jude, Carly Connor, Franky's Evil Party and CRYSTAL.

Saint Luke's All-Dayer @ Saint Luke's, 5 Aug
Glasgow’s live music weekend concludes with a decidedly male all-dayer at Saint Luke's, where 15 bands, including Holy Esque and Shredd, will play across two stages.

Bishop Nehru @ Stereo, 5 Aug
Meanwhile, all the hip-hop heads will most certainly be over at Stereo to see New York wunderkind Bishop Nehru, who is still only 21 years old; you heard, 21 YEARS OLD. His hotly anicipated Elevator Act I & II album came out in March, produced by MF Doom and Kaytranada this is one show not to miss.
