Alongside the release of their latest single Downtown Operation, which features a sample of iconic trade unionist Arthur Scargill, Edinburgh band of brothers Dubinski announced that their second album – What Is Your Definition of Happiness? – would arrive in the new year.

With the single out now, channeling artists like Maxïmo Park, we catch up with the quartet – Eugene, Eoin, Donal and Fergus Gaine – to talk inspirations, forthcoming tours, and the importance of connection, plus we find out the band's favourite album of the year. Unlike almost everyone else, it isn't Charli xcx's BRAT...

Before we get into it, as we’re deep in end of the year coverage at The Skinny, what’s been Dubinski’s album of the year?
Dr. Dog [the eleventh album from the Pennsylvania band of the same name] is our album of 2024 because it captures the familiar charm of their signature songwriting while introducing fresh sounds and consistently exceptional tracks.

Okay, now that’s out of the way, congratulations on the supremely catchy Downtown Operation. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the single, and why you chose to sample Arthur Scargill?
Downtown Operation speaks to the blindness of political leaders who perpetuate a system that creates economic injustice and fuels acts of desperation by the disenfranchised. We found the Arthur Scargill speech relevant because it represented a powerful stance against government and authority corruption, advocating for the people.

It's the lead single from your forthcoming new album – What's Your Definition of Happiness? You say the record flows in a similar way to the seasons; can you tell us more about it?
This record is a journey of love, happiness, pain, sorrow, grief, healing, growth, and acceptance, inspired by our real-life experiences of losing loved ones, making new friends along the way, and discovering ourselves. The album flows in a similar way to the seasons because both follow a natural progression of change, emotion, and transformation. Just like how the seasons evolve from the warmth and growth of spring to the introspective chill of winter, the album takes the listener on a journey through different emotional landscapes.

On the record you worked with some pretty renowned producers in Mike Horner (Franz Ferdinand, Placebo, Hot Chip) and Robbie Nelson (Beck, Royal Blood, The Kooks). How did those collaborations come about and what was it like working with the pair?
We first met Robbie and Mike several years ago at XPO North in Inverness. They were eager to collaborate on our second album after contributing significantly to our debut. Working with them was an absolute pleasure – they challenged us to think differently about the structure, sound, and overall feel of the record. It was fantastic to exchange ideas and collaborate so freely with them.

You’ve got a pretty big tour planned in Europe for January – can you tell us more about that?
We’re thrilled about the upcoming January tour. It’s always a rewarding experience connecting with so many wonderful people in various cities and exploring new places. We’re also excited to be touring alongside The Wanton Bishops from Beirut, Lebanon.

Beyond the January tour and the album, what else does 2025 have in store for Dubinski?
In 2025, following the release of our album, we’ll be hitting the road for an extensive tour, bringing our music to new cities and connecting with fans across the globe. Stay tuned for an unforgettable live experience!

And finally, what is your definition of happiness?
We’re still trying to figure that out individually, but we all collectively agree that happiness comes from the connections we make with others, the growth we experience, and the ability to appreciate the small, beautiful moments along the way.
