Resident Advisor: Mark Thorne
We meet local record shop owner and community-supporter Mark Thorne to find out what he loves about living in Edinburgh
Who are you and what do you do?
Hi, I'm Mark Thorne and I am the manager and owner of Thorne Records in leafy Bruntsfield.
What’s been a highlight of the last 12 months for you?
Being named one of the best record shops in the world by The Financial Times.
What’s coming up in the future for you?
All a bit top secret at the moment but we are hoping to release a 7" single by a Scottish artist towards the end of the summer.
Where do you recommend people go in Edinburgh?
Edinburgh is built on seven hills, my favourite being Blackford Hill which has a fairly easy stroll to the top with the city's best views of Arthur's Seat, The Royal Mile and the Castle. Go for a pint or three in Morningside's Canny Man's afterwards.
Favourite place to eat?
Mother India's Cafe on Infirmary Street. Their Chilli Garlic Chicken is my death row meal.
Favourite place to drink?
Home Bar (formally the legendary party bar, Cuckoo's Nest) in Tollcross.
Favourite shop?
Ah ha ha Jokes and Novelties on Victoria Street (I'm partial to a fake jobbie). It is actually currently closed but surely someone will rescue this bespectacled institution?
Why do you like living here?
Edinburgh hosts the world's largest arts festival all August AND it does a bloody good Christmas all December (and we have the Hogmanay street party too of course). That means that at least one day in every six it is full-on party time and I like those odds!
What annoys you about living here?
When locals say, "I hate the festival."
Do you have an Edinburgh festivals survival tip?
Don't worry about the weather, tell yourself it is only money and spend as much time as possible drinking in the outside bars at George Square.
