Jessie Buckley stars as a Glasgow pub singer with dreams of Nashville in the knockout comedy-drama Wild Rose

Step aside A Star Is Born, there’s a new drama about a raw singing talent reaching for the heavens, although the diamond in the rough of Wild Rose is a tad more foul-mouthed than Lady Gaga.

Talented Irish actor Jessie Buckley (doing a decent Scottish accent) is the country music-loving title character, Rose-Lynn, who has a couple of things standing between her and stardom in Nashville. First, she’s on remand from prison and under curfew with an ankle tag. And second, she has two young kids who have been playing second fiddle to her singing aspirations. Julie Walters is also brilliant as Rose-Lynn’s no-nonsense mother, who reckons it’s time for her wild daughter to give up on her big ambitions.

Tom Harper, who directed the ace coming-of-age film The Scouting Book for Boys as well as episodes of all your favourite TV (Peaky Blinders, War & Peace, Misfits, This is England '86), directs this knockout comedy-drama, which heads to UK cinemas on 12 April. We defy anyone not to fall for Wild Rose’s charms, but expect it to go down particularly well with a Glasgow audience. The soundtrack, too, is also great, featuring many country classics as well as a beautiful ode to Glasgow written by Caitlyn Smith, Kate York, and, rather surprisingly, Hollywood treasure Mary Steenburgen.
