Forget Ocean’s 8. If you’re looking for a female-led heist movie with a bit more grit, look no further than Steve McQueen’s crime thriller Widows. It tells the story of four women – Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Erivo – who have to turn bank robbers when their criminal husbands all end up dead and leave them in hawk to some shifty guys, who include a suit-wearing Colin Farrell and his heavies Brian Tyree Henry and Daniel Kaluuya.

“The best thing we have going for us is being who we are… because no one thinks we have the balls to pull this off,” says Viola Davis, the steely leader of this ad hoc crime team. Set in contemporary Chicago, the film also features Lukas Haas, Jacki Weaver, Robert Duvall and Liam Neeson, who plays Davis’ husband. This is McQueen's first time behind the camera since winning the Oscar for 12 Years a Slave. The script, meanwhile, comes courtesy of Gillian Flynn, who wrote the pulpy bestseller Gone Girl, as well as the screenplay for its film adaptation.

Widows is released 9 Nov by 20th Century Fox; take a look at the first trailer in the player above or on YouTube.
