La La Land leads Golden Globe nominations

Awards season heats up as La La Land, Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea lead the pack. More surprisingly, Deadpool receives a brace of nominations...

Awards season is well and truly upon us as the 74th Golden Globe Awards were announced this Monday. Musical La La Land cements its place as Oscar frontrunner with seven Globe nominations, including best picture (comedy/musical), best director for Damien Chazelle and best actor and actress nods for its stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

Moonlight, a powerful coming of age film about a gay black man, received one fewer nomination than La La Land with six, including a best director nomination for Barry Jenkins and best supporting acting nominations for Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali. The other big Oscar hopeful, Manchester by the Sea, from director Kenneth Lonergan, received five nominations. The latter films compete in the best picture (drama) category with Lion, Hacksaw Ridge and Hell or High Water, from Scottish filmmaker David Mackenzie.

La La Land’s competition for best picture (comedy/musical) includes Irish coming of age musical Sing Street and, perhaps the biggest surprise of the night, Deadpool, in which Ryan Reynolds (who’s nominated for best comedy actor) plays a disfigured mercenary with a potty mouth.

In terms of dramatic performances, the best actor category features Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic), Denzel Washington (Fences) and Joel Edgerton (Loving). Best actress will be between Amy Adams (Arrival), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving), Jessica Chastain (Miss Sloane) and Natalie Portman (Jackie).

In terms of TV, Stranger Things, the year’s most talked about show, is up against The Crown, Game of Thrones, This Is Us and Westworld for best TV drama. In the comedy/musical category, meanwhile, Atlanta, Black-ish, Mozart In The Jungle, Transparent and Veep receive nominations.

Jimmy Fallon host the Golden Globes awards ceremony on 8 Jan. See the full list of nominees below.
