Carol, Bridge of Spies lead BAFTA 2016 nominations

The nominations for the 2016 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) have been announced, with Carol, Bridge of Spies, The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road among the films leading the pack.

Carol, Todd Haynes' bittersweet love story focussing on a forbidden relationship between two women in 1950s New York, is nominated for nine BAFTAs including best film and best director. Both of Carol's stars are also nominated for their roles in the film – Cate Blanchett is up for best actress and Rooney Mara is nominated for best supporting actress. Read our interview with Carol director Todd Haynes. Steven Spielberg's Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies is also nominated for nine awards, including best film and best director, while the Coen Brothers receive a nod for their "humanistic, whip-smart script". 

Joining Carol and Bridge of Spies as Best Film nominees are The Revenant, Spotlight – based on the true story of a group of Boston Globe reporters investigating child abuse in the Catholic Church –  and The Short, a comedy-drama on the 2008 financial crash from Anchorman director Adam McKay. The nominees for Best British Film are Andrew Haigh's 45 Years, Amy Winehouse documentary Amy, The Danish Girl from King's Speech director Tom Hooper, Alex Garland's sci-fi thriller Ex MachinaColm Tóibín adaptation Brooklynand The Lobster.

Saoirse Ronan is nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Brooklyn, with Blanchett, Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Brie Larson (Room) and Maggie Smith (Lady in the Van) completing the nominees list. In Best Actor, Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated for the lead role in The Revenant, as are Eddie Redmayne for his role in The Danish Girl, Matt Damon for The MartianBryan Cranston for Trumbo, and Michael Fassbender for his portrayal of Apple boss Steve Jobs.
