Those of you who sat through those seemingly-endless credits of Avengers: Infinity War will know that Captain Marvel is going to be a key player in the next Avengers installment. We see Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury send a frantic message to the character (played by Brie Larson) on an old pager during that film’s downbeat ending. That can mean only one thing, kids. We’re going back to the 1990s.

You’ll realise in the first few seconds of the new trailer to Captain Marvel that it’s set in the recent past. For starters, we see our hero (real name Carol Danvers) crash land through the roof of a Blockbuster Video. Another clue is that we see the perennially youthful 69-year-old actor Samuel L Jackson looking more fresh-faced than ever as his character, Nick Fury, who takes Danvers under his wing.

Danvers’ backstory is that she’s a US Air Force Pilot who’s developed superpowers after a bizarre accident melds her DNA with that of an alien. Larson and Jackson are joined in the film by Jude Law, who plays Danvers’ mentor, and Ben Mendelsohn, who, of course, plays the film's villain. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the directors behind Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind, are in the directors’ chairs.
