A quirky indie comedy, Wristcutters won't appeal just to film fans but may also serve as a public service announcement to emos. Almost Famous star Patrick Fugit plays glum protagonist Zia who, after being left by his girlfriend, ends it all by slitting his wrists. Waking up in the afterlife, he discovers it's pretty much the same as the world he left behind, only grimier, with the colours less vibrant, the jobs worse and its inhabitants even more depressed. This is a love story/road movie without the usual sugar coating you might expect from most rom-coms. Watch out for excellent cameo appearances from Tom Waits and Arrested Development's Will Arnet as the Messiah. Director Dukic captures great performances from his cast of misfits and gives us scenes and situations that wouldn't look out of place in any Wes Anderson flick. You really shouldn't chuckle about suicide but, with Wristcutters, you may well die laughing. [Kevin McHugh]
