I Love you Phillip Morris is based on a true story, a statement which offers some explanation for where such a bizarre tale comes from. Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) is a dedicated husband and father, a respected police officer and regular church goer. After a car accident he reassesses his life and decides to take drastic action: he leaves his family, embraces his homosexuality and immerses himself in the high life. This all comes with a hefty price and Russell soon resorts to fraud and trickery to maintain his lifestyle. There are few precursors to the many plot twists, which makes I Love You Phillip Morris an unpredictable and wild ride. Carey’s exuberant and ever manic performance is at the core of the film yet is often on the brink of threatening to consume it entirely. Whilst McGregor, as the eponymous Phillip Morris and Russell’s partner, verges embarrassingly close to caricature (complete with another dodgy accent from the actor). Together they’re far from a convincing couple but overall this is entertaining fare and you certainly can’t accuse it of being boring.
