Sarah Millican - Chatterbox DVD

Review by Simon Fielding | 22 Nov 2011

By the time Sarah Millican addresses the topic of hamster squeezing in the early stages of Chatterbox, her ability to add spark to stories about family relationships, soul-destroying jobs and supermarkets with brilliantly filthy lines is well established. Whether she's talking about cakes, giving blood or living alone, her sudden shifts from the prosaic to the exquisitely foul are a consistent joy.

One of the best pieces here, concerning the love of animals, is expertly balanced by Millican's handling of tone and gesture – it is also a fine example of her instinctive feel for the rhythm of a joke. Structurally, the show is robust enough to contain significant audience contributions without losing the thread of the narrative; if anything, these digressions serve to illuminate the intricacy of patterns woven elsewhere.

Engaging routines on sex related breakages and some dubious towelling arrangements provide the thrilling finale, as the flow between some chatty Geordie asides and a commanding, explicit put-down intensifies the closing lines. In the unlikely event of anyone being unconvinced by this performer's talent, some nice DVD extras, including the emotionally blunt 'Five Top Tips On Divorce', should settle the argument.
