Milton Jones: The Lion Whisperer DVD

Review by Bernard O'Leary | 10 Nov 2011

Milton Jones has produced that rarest of beasts: a U-certificate comedy DVD. Not that it’s a kid’s show as such; stoned students and families digesting their Christmas dinner could equally enjoy the surreal and rather daft The Lion Whisperer.

Those familiar with Jones will know the score here. It’s an hour of one-liners, all delivered in a wide-eyed deadpan. Jones fishes everywhere for jokes, which range from painful puns about the Huguenots to gags about Tony The Tiger. In truth, unless you're a diehard Jnes fan you'll probably find it gets slightly wearying after a while, with Jones doing little to break up the pace apart from briefly appearing as his own grandfather (who continues the barrage of one-liners, accompanied by some hilarious slides).

There are a couple of solid-gold jokes in here, as well as quite a few that wouldn’t be considered worthy of a Lidl Christmas cracker. Fans will find the show comfortingly familiar; others are unlikely to be converted. Everyone might agree that an hour of it is slightly too long.

The Lions Whisperer is released on DVD Monday, November 21st, RRP £19.99
