Road trip movies work. Pretty much all of them, from the sublime (Little Miss Sunshine, Sideways, Transamerica) to the ridiculous (Dumb and Dumber, National Lampoon). Life’s A Trip slots somewhere in the middle, and its mix of crass humour and achy poignancy is a surprisingly sweet journey for all concerned. Mark, Jason and McGriff have been friends since school. 40 years later, though, the glory days are long gone, and they’re three of the biggest losers imaginable: a gambling addict on the verge of forfeiting his family; a geeky shop assistant who lives with his Mum; and that saddest of sad creatures, a failed muso. However, Jason winning football tickets spurs a beer, bickering and Bruce Springsteen-fuelled bolt from Pennsylvania to Florida, taking in alligators, magic mushrooms, and the Vanna White Museum along the way. Delivers everything you’d expect from a road movie – disasters, self-discovery, and a fair few belly laughs besides.
