Feature by Film Team | 21 Feb 2016

Today's Highlights

The Adventures of Robin Hood

GFT, 10.30am

You’ve probably seen it a dozen times on wet weekend telly, but don’t miss this chance to experience Errol Flynn swashing his buckle on the big screen. Costner and Crowe, hang your heads in shame.

Sing Street

GFT, 3pm

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it," is clearly director John Carney's mantra. Following the muched-loved Once and Begin Again, he's back with a loose and charming musical. This one draws from his own life as a depressed teen in Dublin and blends the coming-of-age film with a let's-start-a-band narrative. Aidan Gillen, Jack Reynor and singer Maria Doyle Kennedy are among the adult cast members.

The Boy and the Beast

CCA, 3,15pm

With Hayao Miyazaki now retired, who will claim his crown as the master of anime? Rising 'toon talent Mamoru Hosoda, director of Wolf Children and this inventive buddy movie, might be that heir.

Louder than Bombs

GFT, 5.35pm

Norwegian director Joachim Trier's first English language feature, Louder than Bombs, showcases the director's same flair for visual poetry and elegant storytelling as his earlier homespun arthouse hits (RepriseOslo, August 31st). It's a vividly observed drama following a family (father, Gabriel Byrne; sons, Jesse Eisenberg and newcomer Devin Druid) as they flounder following the death of their mother.

Our reviewer said that, with the film, "Trier, perceiving memory as something malleable, delicately uses flashbacks and sound to allow the narrative to inch along like a cortège, beautifully conceptualising how the mind seeks to reorganise the entropy of memories into a satisfying narrative." Trier will be around for the screening – come see this very talented filmmaker discuss his craft.

Disorder

GFT, 8.30pm

We’re hearing great things about this French thriller starring Diane Kruger and ubiquitous hunk Matthias Schoenaerts. The former is the trophy wife of a wealthy arms dealer; the latter is a PTSD-suffering ex-soldier on bodyguard duty. Variety called this "a fine-cut tension exercise that eventually ignites into a full-blown home-invasion thriller." Colour us intrigued.
