It could be said that festivals these days are no longer the peace loving, power-fighting, Woodstock style love-ins that they once were. Many would probably see that as a refreshing break from pretentiousness but others have equal cause to believe that this turns our major festivals into ordered, commercialised affairs with the same bands year in year out. One festival however that is keen to defy this and return to that feel of counter-culture is the Wickerman festival, taking place near Dundrennan.

The festival is headlined by the likes of the Proclaimers and the Fun Lovin' Criminals and also features the Edene Zone. The Zone is a psychedelic arena featuring a variety of styles and much more over at the Vishnu Lounge (chill out), Voltan Stage (psy trance) and the Bhuta Tent (breaks and house). Two Edinburgh talents that are featuring here are GMac and Believe. GMac is the brains behind the shop Underground Solu'Shun in Cockburn Street, and a former resident and member of the drum & bass specialising Manga crew. His set with Believe in the Bhuta Tent will be a fine example of the DJ talent that Scotland offers. We caught up with GMac for a chat about the event, and their long pedigree in the Scottish club scene.

Underground Solu'Shn is arguably the best shop in Edinburgh for dance music. How long has GMac been involved? "It was opened in 1996 by the Tribal Funktion guys, to great acclaim," explains GMac. "I worked there part time for three-four years before I bought it in May 2006. Vinyl, record shops, clubs, DJing... all part and parcel."

And what can we expect from his set with Believe at the Wickerman Festival? "It'll be Bass Syndicate beats all the way. Rockin' breaks to get the party started." Finally, how have clubs changed since you got involved? "[The] club scene is much smaller on the whole across the UK since those heady days. As generations change, I see new faces in all aspects of the scene, keeping it alive. Whatever happens though, beats will always roll."

Also in the Bhuta Tent is the excellent Lee Coombs. Originally making his name at acid house parties in the late eighties, Coombs has continued to grow in reputation over the last two decades. In the late nineties he began to release records on Finger Lickin' Records and was hailed by the likes of Pete Tong and Seb Fontaine as a talent to watch. More recently he has launched his own label Thrust Recordings, as well as a club night in San Fransisco of the same name. His breakbeat and tech-house is sure to wow the festival crowd.

On the main stage dance fans will also get a treat from legendary electronic pioneers The Orb, who are now seen as a peak time experience for many, despite originally being seen as a chill out band. Anthems such as Little Fluffy Clouds sound as timeless as ever despite the fact it's seventeen years since its release. The two remaining members of The Orb, Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann, continue to work and play live together and there appearance will be a highlight in this eclectic line up. This festival is sure to provide something a little bit different, while it might not be the perfect homage to sixties psychedelia it certainly will be an excellent two days you'll be glad you caught.

The Wickerman Festival takes place from 20 -21 Jul, tickets are £65 including camping (booking fee and other charges may apply). See www.thewickermanfestival.co.uk for more info, and a full line-up.
