Dr Lonnie Smith @ The Fruitmarket, 25 Jun

Article by David McNally | 06 Jul 2010

I've just invented a new genre. It's called Acid Mod, and it sounds like the Motown house band easing off after hours, playing what they want to after turning out the hits all day. The hip priest of my new church, Hammond B3 warrior Dr Lonnie Smith is in town tonight and those wise enough to catch him are blessed indeed.

As well as the Dr's magic fingers (and nose, and ass - yes he plays keys with his ass at one point - no bum notes either), we have Jonathan Kreisberg on smoking guitar and Jamire Williams on drums, both strong contenders for any fantasy funk outfit. The set is for the most part relentlessly firey but they hit on a couple of blues that really bring out the sanctified element of the B3, almost solemn but still funky as shit.

The jams go on forever and most of the time hit you like God's own groove - one is so unstoppable it takes 10 minutes to end. If this is what the band in heaven sound like, then I'm done with sinning. [David McNally]

Played as part of Glasgow International Jazz Festival.
