The Birds and The Bees

Take a situation everyone has had to face and then squeeze every last drop of brilliantly excruciating awkwardness from it. This is what Mark Butler achieves with The Birds and The Bees. The audience are cast as his hormonal eleven year old science class, while he’s the teacher struggling for the right words as he describes the anatomy and procedures of sex. It was a toe curling delight to find that even at the ripe old age the average audience member was at, we still cringed and blushed when confronted with the facts of life. Maybe it was the feeling of being back in a classroom with the fear of being called on at any moment to answer a question. You may have though it was embarrassing the first time round, but trust me it’s worse when you get the answers wrong now. And I should warn you, if you are naughty, you will be forced out in front of the class.
