Stewart Francis - Same Jokes, Better Timing

Article by Cara McGuigan | 27 Mar 2009

Diff’rent strokes for diff’rent folks. A philosophy which covers a multitude of distractions, but none more pointedly than comedy. This was well demonstrated by the difference between Stewart Francis and support act Keir McAllister’s styles, and how well they went down with the audience. McAllister is a good looking, rapid-fire Scot, who rips through his set in a manner not befitting the stoner he claims to be. His piece about drunk logic makes me laugh, but not as much as his tales of sexual humiliation, which actually make my stomach ache. It’s classic Scottish pub humour, with self-deprecating anecdotes building up to a mortifying finish.
So I’m in a great mood by the time dead-eyed Canadian Stewart Francis comes on. Unfortunately, Francis is all about the one-liners. I’m not. Way too much direct stimulation, where how much you can take depends directly on how much you fancy the other person. And considering all Francis’ jokes all hinge on insulting someone, the answer for me’d be not much. However, some of the audience were ending themselves at his punchline per minute ratio. C’est la vie. One man’s humour is another man’s duuull.
