Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre

Article by Ann-Marie Reilly | 03 Apr 2009

I didn’t believe sock puppets would actually be involved but I’m staring at a Punch and Judy puppet stage and sure enough, two sock characters appear. Their voices are too quiet but maybe it’s just the mic volume needs a boost. That seems to happen frequently in this venue.

I’m not laughing much and nor are the rest of the audience. The jokes are insipid with moments of inspiration, such as the Relationship Matters meets John McCririck meets House of Commons commentary.

The songs are clever, the socks do a great short version of a Shakespeare play and some witty improv with audience participation, but several jokes limp lamely, some references are dated and it gives me no joy to tell you that the loudest laugh went to a sock puppet in drag … especially when ‘her’ wig fell off. I felt embarrassed for the artist and disappointed for the audience.
