John Gavin: A-Z of Parenting

Article by Roslyn Frame | 31 Mar 2010

Standing in a sold-out, bustling Glaswegian pub, listening to the parenting alphabet according to tormented father of three John Gavin, it is easy to see why the Hamilton-born comic was crowned as Ha Ha Comedy's Scottish Comedian of the Year in 2009. Rapturous applause follows every sardonic one-liner and heckles remain friendly if not mildly supportive throughout the night.

Gavin has his role of a man under daily siege by four females executed to a tee with his stout, congenial appearance and harangued demeanour. Supported up by the equally blokey Davey C, the crowd greedily gobble up every letter of Gavin’s homemade guide to coping with the little horrors.

Effortlessly filling the hour with heart-warming tales of burying rabbits while rigor mortis has firmly set in and awkward toddler mispronunciations, Gavin’s glib delivery is fresh and inspiring, despite the conventional subject matter. Definitely a comedian I hope to see more of and, with his children all still under the age of six, he'll have decades worth of material to work from.
