David Heffron: Don't Think Because I Understand, I Care

Article by Roslyn Frame | 30 Mar 2010

‘Random bullshit’ (his own words) proved to be quite an accurate synopsis of David Heffron's Glasgow show. After a late start and disappointing warm-up act, he flusters around with his equipment before leading us through his power point presentation-based gig.

Launching straight into sci-fi movie gags, including the shrewd observation of parallels between Star Wars’ Admiral Ackbar and terrorist leaders and the deconstruction of latest Hollywood epic Avatar, the self-confessed IT geek establishes the crux of his performance; one which may alienate those not adept in the world of robots and jedis. However, it's when he digresses into his hand-drawn diagrams, illustrating issues such as the lunacy behind The Killers’ lyrics that Heffron’s comic ability takes precedence and the audience jovially approve.

The sharply comical slides make for a visually rewarding and distinctive show, but can come across as a prop behind which Heffron hides his lack of poise as a performer. As a result, he often descends into too much swearing or reprimanding himself midstream. Heffron is an amiable man but his show is definitely aimed at those of a Klingon persuasion.
