Kid Canaveral at SxSW: Talking with Guitars

Blog by David MacGregor | 22 Mar 2011

It was a busy, busy one today. Started off by playing the Music For Listeners party at 12 noon at the Red House Pizzeria. It's hard to describe how good this was. Standing on a stage on a patio in the beautiful sunshine playing a gig to a very relaxed and appreciative audience, was an excellent start to the day. I managed to break a string and we discovered that you can't read the display of tuning pedal in the direct sunlight, but Kate and Rose pulled out Quiet Things Are Quiet Now while I fixed my guitar amongst the crowd.

We had a very quick dash across town to the British Music Embassy next to meet up with the Detour Scotland guys. You'll get to see me wearing the highest guitar ever and looking a bit frazzled. Saw Bronto Skylift do an on-street show that got stopped by the local constabulary. It was brilliant. The show, not it getting stopped. Well, both actually. Watching Niall (Strachan, Bronto Guitar-wielder) hold short bursts of 'conversation' with a Police officer using his guitar was most entertaining. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I'm writing this from a Texas police station. We're all here.

We went for some Margaritas with Kenny and Derek (Blood Orange, Regular and Strawberry) on the roof of the Iron Cactus W6th Street on the pretense of getting some food before the second King Creosote show. They were magic. Beginning to feel the sun an awful lot now. I'm too pale for this. I'm loving the weather, but my epidermis is not.

Today's King Creosote show was bloody excellent. It was great fun this afternoon. I loved every moment of it, well apart from one point during 'Not One Bit Ashamed' when I thought my guitar was perhaps deafening everyone. What a great fun gig. The BBC filmed this one as well, so hopefully you'll be able to see us bouncing about with big grins on our faces and Kenny laughing his head off, later in the year. Everyone seemed really rather impressed with the show today. Keep your eyes peeled for a one-off KC/KidC collabz show in Scotland in the Spring. I'm still grinning about this show, now. Also, I met Stevie Wonder's manager. Nice!

We had less of an ordeal on the bus tonight up until a you gentleman, who introduced himself as 'Pokey' (I'm not going to go into it...) and described himself a bisexual rock and roll god, started waving his syringe about and complaining about the fact that he'd broken his needle. This is pretty atypical. Austin is lovely.

I'll leave you with a wee video of the late night show that Kenny did in Stubb's. Camera work by Kate Lazda.
