White @ Traverse

Feature by Ben Fletcher | 31 Aug 2010

From the moment you enter the bright white world of Catherine Wheels’ newest show, you know you’re in safe hands. Andy Manley, one of Scotland’s top makers of theatre for wee ones, and compadre Ian Cameron have created a thing of beauty: witty, touching and accessible for even the tiniest of tots. On Shona Reppe’s wondrous set, magical transformations turn the stage into a carnival of colour, eggs fall from the sky, an exploding dustbin showers the audience with confetti. Throw in pitch-perfect performances and a soundtrack of bongs, giggles and whistles, and the whole piece can’t fail to entertain.

Ostensibly aimed at 2 to 4 years, the show’s audience was packed with babies, toddlers and children who all responded with amazement at the spectacle unfolding over 35 minutes. There are no cheap tricks here, resorting to “it’s behind you” or gags about bottoms, just immaculately crafted physical humour. All in all, White is a delight.
