The Rain That Washes @ Pleasance Dome

Review by Kayleigh Donaldson | 22 Aug 2013

As Zimbabwe’s political opposition challenges Robert Mugabe’s recent victory in the presidential elections, it feels timely and necessary to take a step back and view the situation from a fresh point-of-view, one all too familiar with the complexities and difficulties of the country’s state of affairs. Chickenshed bring the true story of Christopher Maphosa's journey from optimistic freedom fighting teenager to political prisoner in the aftermath of Mugabe’s rise to power.

Performed by Ashley Maynard with vibrancy and a knack for voices (his Mugabe impression is particularly spot-on), The Rain That Washes is a fast-paced piece that condenses and explains a complex history in an accessible manner (the programme also comes with a handy glossary of terms for later reading). Maynard’s warmth and vivacity perfectly embodies the early optimism of the upcoming change to the country as well as the crushing post-election reality. This is a crucial insight into the oft-forgotten realities of life under Mugabe from one who lived it, and a much needed reminder of the man behind the punchline portrayed by primarily privileged white media.

The Rain That Washes is a hugely affecting and powerfully performed show that left the audience gasping several times. When the real Christopher Maphosa steps on stage at the end, it only drives home harder the true power of the piece.
