The Disappeared @ Summerhall
An interactive and immersive delight, The Disappeared is a compelling example of cabaret as a powerful medium for exploring both sexy and political themes
There is something about a cabaret that is perfectly suited to a sense of impending doom. The Disappeared is no exception; it masterfully intertwines sensuality, humour and physical storytelling with its darker themes of political resistance and historical trauma. Nova Duh’s sultriness, humour and physical dramaturgy are enrapturing. The control and expression generated from Nova’s movements are a wonderful example of embodied storytelling. The live music by Josh Herring is also an impressive feat; the two play off each other seamlessly with a charismatic connection. This fusion of music and movement underscores the cabaret's unique ability to convey complex themes, making the show both entertaining and thought-provoking.
The room is transformed into a late-night club with excellent lighting and a scattering of props. The audience is guided through each section by a deft and compelling Nova, as you get ready for the evening with the star. Audience interaction is maintained through intense eye contact and constant participation; the audience are an integral part of the show. No longer simply an observer, you become an active participant, continuing in a markedly Boal-esque tradition. There are moments when the show's pace and timing convoluted the narrative slightly; however, there is a helpful QR code which allows the participants to understand specific cultural nuances and maintain synchronisation. It all serves to ensure you are actively engaged in the show.
The allusions to Latin American political resistance are represented subtly through props, such as a decorated balaclava and the banging of kitchen pans. It adds layers of meaning to the performance, transforming it into a poignant representation of creative resistance from a queer Lantix perspective. The Disappeared is an exceptional show highly recommended to anyone with a curiosity in the untold stories of the Latinx people of the Americas – and a taste for the sexy and fierce.
