Shitty Deal Puppet Theatre Company’s Oh! What A Shitty War

Foul mouth puppets might be a cliche, but can they be more than just shit?

Feature by Ed Comer | 29 Aug 2009

Absolutely everything you could want from a Fringe production. Subversive, silly and exuberant, Shitty Deal Puppet Theatre Company whisk through a potted history of the major wars, pretty much from the beginning of time to the present day.

Their use of nostalgic toys and kitsch culture references belies the intelligence behind the production and the non-appearance of the Prophet Mohammed in one scene has as much to tell us about Western self-censorship as it does about a conflict between Mr. Potato Head and a sock puppet. Add to that the disturbing honesty of Mr. Doper, the puppet protagonist, and you have a recipe for an excellent way to spend 40 minutes of your life.

Oh! What A Shitty War is something your kid brother might have produced in the garage. If your kid brother happened to have wit, politically savvy and access to too many dolls.
