Hitler! The Musical @ Point Hotel

One Balled Maniac gets Funky

Article by Antony Sammeroff | 18 Aug 2011

“People are always insulting me... I need to set the record straight... An apple in a bowl of bananas is still an apple. Six million Jews doesn't make you a bad person.”

From the outset any show daring so flippant a title as Hitler! The Musical will attract viewers for sheer novelty value, but there is (about 6,000,000 times) more to this new musical “lolocaust” than shallow gimmickery. (Too soon? Sorry! Let’s just pretend I never said anything!)

The Skinny was assured by the producer that this “exposition of things historical, psychological, and moustashical” would be a "Hit[ler]," and so it is. TL Musical Theatre present Hitler’s story, told from his own perspective, through some of the best singing and choreography at the fringe.

The score is accomplished and diverse, embracing everything from vaudeville to country, gospel and (the obligatory) rap. There are some oblique jokes thrown in for music enthusiasts (they are former Trinity Conservatoire students after all) - a tip of the hat to Grieg’s piano concerto, a spoof on Who Will Buy from Oliver and quirky joke on coloratura, and exploitation of familiar mischievous theories such as the attribution of Hitler’s fall to malice to his failure to get into art school.

We are entreated to find “The Man Behind the Moustache,” while forewarned that any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.
