FATAL FLOWER @ Summerhall
Valentina Tóth presents a surreal, musically rich, and boldly theatrical ode to the 'hysterical woman' in FATAL FLOWER
Valentina Tóth draws us into her eccentric, genre-defying world, channeling her elite classical music training into something far stranger, funnier, and more subversive. Peppered with storytelling monologues directed to the audience, she slips between a kaleidoscope of female characters, weaving absurdist humour and uncomfortable truths into a show that constantly takes you by surprise. One moment she’s channelling a saccharine Disney Channel-esque performer; the next, she’s in full Southern Belle mode, belting out a riotously blue revenge ballad that brings the house down. Her style is alternative and unpredictable, like a theatrical Björk, weaving together opera, piano and even lip-syncing in a self-penned Rolodex that showcases Tóth as a true multidisciplinary artist.
Though Tóth’s exaggerated archetypes are bold and timely, the satire can unravel when the performance remains at the same heightened state, lacking the necessary light and shade. Without quieter moments to ground the chaos, the commentary risks being lost in its own theatrical excess. Still, even in its less cohesive moments, FATAL FLOWER never stops reaching for something bold, and these shortcomings are far overpowered by Tóth's talent. She is at her best when her extremes are held in balance: absurdity with poignancy, sex with shame, anger with joy. Her final burlesque number, which tackles body image through confessional song and unflinching boldness is a perfect example – taboo, tender, and unforgettable.
FATAL FLOWER is a wildly original ride from start to finish. A performer of serious musical and theatrical skill, Tóth’s songwriting is exceptional and her voice magnetic. She demonstrates both vocal and emotional range with a mixture of arias, folksong, musical theatre and that which defies genre, all leaving their own unique imprint. Valentina Tóth might be a hysterical woman on stage, but behind it all lies a masterful creator.
