Dance Doctor Dance

Dad Dance Delights

Feature by Margaret Kirk | 24 Aug 2010

For a lecture about the health benefits of dance, Dance Doctor Dance is the most fun an audience can have while receiving academic wisdom. Dr Lovatt's winning personality helps, as does his idiosyncratic mixture of scientific experimentation and feel good audience participation. Clearly divided into four parts, and concluding with a mass disco funk-out, DDD makes the case for dance as a social and personal good, even having time to showcase a wee spot of contemporary choreography.

The Doctor's enthusiasm is infectious. A lover of the groove and the scientific method, he illustrates his points with routines - including a demonstration of "dad dancing" - the hyper-masculine carry on that disgraces weddings and family discos. The hard research behind his conclusions makes this an oddity on the Fringe: a theatrical work that doesn't leave the difficult questions unanswered.

Unashamedly intelligent, but expressed in clear language and the occasional good joke, DDD is a treat for dance-lovers, demonstrating how particular forms stimulate the mind and the body. It also hints at the way that the body expresses emotional states, sexual availability, fertility and confidence, suggesting new strategies for the next big night out at Confusion is Sex.
