Bark Bark is the magical and delicate tale of a bird-killing dog and the couple who have been hired to look after it for the weekend. The play, by live-cinema company Buzzcut, is performed through the medium of puppets, which enhances its enchanting atmosphere. There is an array of different handmade dioramas with intricate details of each room or woodland setting, which are masterfully constructed and utilised. This is alongside five performers, the puppet of the dog, finger puppets for human legs and a live camera projecting it all onto a big screen.

As you can see not only the final product on screen but also the real sets and performers in front of the audience, the set-up allows for a special appreciation of this intricate medium and its magical payoff. Showing the puppet legs followed by the real actor’s faces in a quick, live camera transition really adds depth to the production of this show and creates a realistic aspect to the storyline. Many aspects of the production are beautifully done, from the turning plate that represents the never-ending woods to the clear sheet with marks on it being wobbled around to symbolise a flock of birds. The use of torches in lighting also helps add to the magical atmosphere and simultaneously enhances the cohesive storytelling.

Whenever the pacing gets a little slow due to the fidgety process of live puppeteering, a dark twist or dream sequence comes right in the nick of time to keep the show engaging. Not only this, but the cast also had a last-minute change due to medical emergencies and the performers did an amazing job despite less familiar roles and positions. The artistry and intricate nature of the sets, props and puppets are incredible, the live music is beautiful and emotional, and they get many a laugh from the captivated audience members. This is a truly endearing and beautiful production, recommended to anyone who is interested in dogs, puppetry and quirky shows, or who just fancies seeing something unlike anything they have ever seen before.
