Tony Lee

There remains a constant fear of accidentally falling under his spell that keeps the audience visibly on edge throughout

Review by Ben Judge | 14 Aug 2007

Tony Lee is a demon. Not only does he have crazy psychic powers, but he uses them for evil. Somewhere, deep in the heartland of the moral majority, an ethics committee must be going mental.

It's very difficult going to a hypnosis comedy gig (especially one which carries an XXX rating) as a reviewer and not be terrified at the potentially humiliating tasks you might be forced to enter into. Therefore, when going to review a hypnosis show, it is very important for the critic to bring along a willing guinea pig. Enter Fest deputy editor, Chris Williams. One must remain a passive observer, after all.

Technically, Lee is fantastic. His voice ranges from the comforting and relaxing to the plain sinister, which feels simultaneously reassuring and frightening. There remains a constant fear of accidentally falling under his spell that keeps the audience visibly on edge throughout. The hypnosis is truly electrifying stuff.

Lee’s routine is puerile stuff of the highest degree. As the title should probably give away, almost all of the hypnosis involves some kind of sexual mimicry, stripping, alcohol consumption or general personal humiliation. It must be said that, on paper, this all looks particularly tiresome.

However, following an hour and a half of watching Chris try to stick his head up a stranger’s arse, wildly hump a chair because he thinks it’s unicorn mating season and mimicking fellatio on both girl and boy, it never gets dull. That said, seeing his orgasm face is a memory I could do without.
