The Oxford Revue: Etch A Sketch

Review by Chris McCall | 26 Aug 2009

So, will the Oxford Revue of 2009 go on to match the success of previous alumni such as Al Murray and Michael Palin? The short answer is no.

The performers themselves are all confident, likeable types, who despite their best efforts are simply let down by a rather dodgy script. Revue shows are notoriously difficult to pull off. Breaking down an hour's worth of material into 20 smaller chunks might seem a sensible idea – but in the audience's eyes you are as only as good as your last sketch. If you get genuine laughs for one, you ruin it by following it up with something toe-curlingly awful – which, needless to say, happens frequently in this show.
