The Axis of Awesome Comeback Spectacular

Review by Thomas Kerr | 13 Aug 2008

Few things inspire the sort of collective dread that musical comedy does. As any festival veteran knows, it can provide the filling to the most offensively awful comedy imaginable. Take an acoustic guitar, three chords and a couple of weak jokes—ideally inneundo of a pitiful quality—and you've got three minutes of hell lined up. Luckily, Axis of Awesome—warmly introduced as “one of Australia's most tolerated bands”—are the good kind of musical comedy.

Supported in cracking style by Poland's next top boy band, 3-Sum and their hit single 'Surprise Sex!', Axis of Awesome make easy work of living up to their fantastic name. The songs keep themselves brief and to the point, and showcase a superb comedy repitoire including the ingenous 'Adult Mutant Ninja Turtles' and 'Moderately Rock 'n' Roll'. Where Axis excel themselves though is in taking well known songs and laying their own lyrics on top – a selection of songs played over The Fray's 'How to Save a Life' included 'How to Bake a Scone' and the dubious, yet uproarious, 'How to Kill a Hooker'.

What really makes Axis a resounding success is the stage presence of the band, in particular lead singer Jordan Raskopoulus who holds an uncanny resemblance to Jack Black of School of Rock fame and boasts an equally generous dose of charisma. When the three get into their stride they are both hilarious and hugely enjoyable. If only all musical comedy was like this.
