Nick Pynn @ Inlingua

So much talent and so little time, his lack of restraint is his only weakness

Review by Finbarr Bermingham | 16 Aug 2007

Ever heard of an Appalachian lap dulcimer? No? Nor had we. But then, we'd never heard of Nick Pynn before this evening. Apparently though, he's a connected guy.

Having earned his spurs as a session musician par excellence with the likes of Robert Plant, Steve Harley and Arthur Brown (the God of hellfire to you and me), Pynn takes his solo show to the snug surroundings of Inlingua throughout his August residency. His musical prowess is awesome, playing ouzouki, banjo and fiddle and leaving the capacity crowd of 20 purring with approval all the while. His improvisation is admirable too. Loops, live samples (including one of Rich Hall) and unlikely percussion (try a deck of cards) add layer after layer to his rootsy sound.

Alas, with so much talent and so little time, Pynn occasionally tries too much. His lack of restraint is his only weakness.
