Maximum Crew

Although energised and at times impressive, this show is missing a spark

Mix together a wiry bunch of break dancers with a couple of body poppers and you have Maximum Crew. Although energised and at times impressive, this Korean dance troupe hop, pop and twist their way down a well trodden and somewhat dull path in the land of breakdance. The all-male dancers thrive on attention, taking it in turns to show off their talent, lapping up the reaction from the audience.

At times an evident lack of focus leads to sloppy arm and footwork. This is masked occasionally by the clever use of space, creating some interesting formations and interactions. As each breaker tries to outdo the next, gasp-inducing feats are mastered. Although impressive, this feels more like a breakdance competition rather than a show.

As a welcome contrast the two body poppers, encased in beams of light and dripping with sequins, command the stage creating regular interludes to the breaking. Throughout, this comical pair excites and delights with their robotic body dislocations and funky ‘top rocking.’ However, the glittering costumes, impressive lighting and ear-bashing soundtrack do not disguise the fact that this show is missing a spark.
