Gigalees Crazy Circus Show
From Australian duo Gwendolen Trimboli and Tiffany Mulchany comesa highly energetic, if unoriginal clown show devised for kids. In a performance of slapstick most suitable for very young children, the bickering double act work well together, demonstrating a decade of experience as kids' entertainers. They pull off the combination of smarter Daisy and the more mischievous Wilma with oomph.
Their fluid routine and hyperbolic depictions engage the audience effectively, encouraging all to stand up and participate in catchy sing-alongs and dancing. The sometimes repetitive schedule of juggling and balloon animals does wear a little thin and may easily fail to amuse older children. The duo’s references to Prince Charles and Mick Jagger elicit scarce grins, whilst the hyped “big trick” saved for the finish is rather anti-climatic.
The simplicity of Gigalees Crazy Circus Show does not prove altogether effective. Vibrant costumes are unable to compensate for the unimaginative performance space and uninspiring prop use. A nice touch, however, lies in Daisy and Wilma’s eagerness to meet the children post-performance in the bar downstairs.
Although the twosome keeps the audience giggling throughout the performance, the spectators themselves by far provide the greatest amusement. The pair persuades onlookers of all ages to impersonate animal behaviour. A couple of young volunteers on stage lead enthusiastic acts of flapping wings, elephant trunks and monkey climbing. The duo’s ability to laugh at themselves is infectious for children and adults alike. It is refreshing to see an audience who have the capacity to not take themselves too seriously.
