A Light in the North

A bit of a mixed bag but there is still much to recommend it

Held in its workshop, gardens and other venues around Newhaven, the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s Magazine ’07 is a multi-media event showcasing new works by fifteen artists in various different themes and styles. A generally strong collection, the outstanding contribution comes in the form of Etiquette, a work by the art collective, FOUND. Taking the form of a site-specific sound sculpture, Etiquette's array of sounds, ranging from a buzz saw to people chattering, see the work interacts with the viewer as much its surroundings, the six months of collective effort that went into it.

Other highlights of Magazine '07 include Jessica Lloyd-Jones' Spectre Beacon, another site-specific work that makes use of a disused lighthouse. As daylight recedes a glow emerges, creating a wonderful radiant light and obviously to fully appreciate this work it has to be viewed at night. With this in mind the exhibition organisers advise you to visit at half past ten at night. With some weaker sections Magazine ‘07 is a bit of a mixed bag but there is still much to recommend it even if your visit is taken just as an opportunity to explore the north of the city.
