Susan Morrison @ The Stand

Article by Jenni Brooks | 28 Aug 2010

It's a refreshing change from visiting comedians' token tartan gags to see a home-grown performer doing largely Scottish material. A regular on the local scene, Susan Morrison is a straightforward stand-up who works the crowd with ease and warmth. In this show, she structures her collection of observations loosely around a selection of F-words chosen by the audience.

Today she covers farts, feminism and fundamentalism as well as the most obvious F-word. We get some informative stuff on the earliest appearance of the F-word in print – in the court records of King James IV – and a heartfelt account of growing up in the Church of Scotland. More random riffs include the delights of shopping at Lidl and the perils of going to the loo in outer space.

Given Morrison's diverse range of material, it's a shame that she often relies on easy targets and lazy stereotypes for her laughs. The show is possibly constrained by the young audience and early time slot, but I'd like to have seen Morrison sometimes push the boundaries into more radical territory.
