Mike Wozniak @ The Stand

Article by Lizzie Cass-Maran | 20 Aug 2010

The Stand IV is the perfect venue for this show. Although the audience was still undeservedly small, the small setting suits the tempo of this show, where it feels like everyone has come along for a nice chat.

The show is centred around Wozniak and his wife's efforts to have a baby. This is mixed with a lot of mainstream observational material – he's not trying subversive or political, but at the same time avoids being predictable.

With a laid-back style much reminiscent of Miles Jupp, Wozniak avoids the appearance of being desperate to make you laugh. You feel you're perhaps at a relaxing fertility seminar and so when the laughs do come, you're almost surprised, enoying it all the more.

As a woman with pulsating ovaries, I found his material on their quest to conceive as much fascinating as funny. The disinterested in this topic might not appreciate it in quite the same way, but the show holds your attention regardless.

Consistently engaging and full of giggles, Wozniak has a wide appeal that will get him far.

The Stand IV, 20-29 Aug, 9.10pm, £8 (£7)
