Greg Davies @ The Pleasance

Article by Erin McElhinney | 26 Aug 2010

Rather than a mediocre student joke, the title of this show is a beautifully philosophical moment in Greg Davies' life, and the basis for his first solo endeavour. It sets the tone for an hour of confidently handled comedic storytelling, based on the ridiculously meaningless but joyful moments of this ex-teacher's life.

Davies' attitude is one of 'if you can't beat it/believe it/have it surgically removed from your memory, then laugh at it' continuing in the dark, sometimes twisted vein of We Are Klang. But then, teaching drama to kids for 10 years'll do that to you.

For someone so skilled at riding the wave of pathos, the only let down is a very occasional crash into all-out grossness, which jars with the rest of the clever, balanced act. Davies is able to reveal the inherent comedy behind human foibles and everyday behaviour, and quite frankly, he doesn't need bellowed vagina jokes in order to make anyone laugh. But it's the only little wobble from a stand-up finding his solo feet, and who is only going to get better.
