Frisky & Mannish @ Underbelly

Article by Erin McElhinney | 20 Aug 2010

This time last year, Frisky & Mannish were having their 'explosion' moment, when their show became one of the tickets to have, and now they're back, for the oh-so-tricky 'second album'. I breathe an almost audible sigh of relief as they proceed to deliver.

The comedy duo are a little something for everyone. Much like the music they so skilfully lampoon, they have a mix of up beats and down, restraint and hysteria, intelligence and immaturity.

Whilst the premise is a little cringeworthy – audience members have to come to a college of pop, to listen to a lecture by F&M – the content is not only good comedy, but (if you pay attention) bloody clever. Lily Allen teams up with Noel Coward to demonstrate how tone is everything, Florence & The Machine is outed as nicking her vocals from Evanescence, and the idiotic rules of Diva Duets are demonstrated.

Frisky & Mannish have original, funny material, excellent comedy timing, and genuine musical talent that is thankfully not going to waste in a call centre somewhere. They get a little bit too ranty on occasion, but Mannish's take on techno dancing is probably worth the ticket price by itself.
